NAMI Basics is an education program for parents and caregivers of children andadolescents living with mental illness that provides resources and practicalinsights. The NAMI Basics course is taught by trained parents who have livedsimilar experiences with their own children. The course covers:
•An introduction to the basics of mental illness, including the biology ofmental illness, the challenges of getting an accurate diagnosis, and the latestmedical research and advancements in treatment.
•An overview of treatment options for your child.
•Strategies to cope with the impact of a child’s illness on the rest of thefamily, including caring for the caregivers.
•Tools for success e.g., effective communication and problem solving skills, recordkeeping, and navigating critical support systems (school, mental health care,etc.)
It is not necessary that your child has a specific diagnosis.
