STARTING AT THE BEGINNING:SPEECH AND LANGUAGE BIRTH TO KINDERGARTEN

The session will focus onhelping children with disabilities and developmental delays develop communicationand language skills from birth to kindergarten. What are the differencesbetween communication, language, and speech? What prepares your child to speak?What can you do at home with your child before the first word? How does yourchild progress from sounds to words to conversation? Dr. Kumin will describeand demonstrate examples of activities you can do at home to promote thedevelopment of communication. Transitional systems to promote communication andlanguage before your child begins to speak and activities to expand speech onceyour child begins to speak will be addressed. She will also address the role ofplay and how it can be used to stimulate language. Dr. Kumin will also discusseffective techniques for working with IFSP teams, IEP teams, and speechlanguage pathologists in preschool and early elementary school, clinical, andprivate practice settings.
