SHEDDING LABELS, SHEDDING SHAME:HOW TO UNLOCK POWERFUL ADHD ACCOMMODATIONS WITH ACCEPTANCE

Accommodations help level the playing field at school, but sometimes they alsowork to alienate a child with ADHD from his or her peers. Children are veryattuned to social cues; they notice who gets more time on the test and whovisits the resource room regularly. By high school, those who qualify forthe extra services may avoid them at all costs. Walking into that room orutilizing other accommodations for ADHD labels them as ‘different.’ If they usethe resources and do well, they feel like they cheated or are undeserving oftheir high marks. To ensure that students continue using the resources thatbenefit them most, educators and parents must adopt strategies that fosteracceptance by celebrating the differences we all have. It’s not just the students with ADHD, dyslexia, and ASD that have unique learning styles. The solutionthat benefits everyone is for schools (and workplaces) to deliveraccommodations in an accepting environment.
