MENTAL HEALTH OUT LOUD: HOW TO DE-ESCALATE EXPLOSIVE STRESSREACTIONS

Wednesday, June 29, 2022 4:00 pm

Virtual Event

Join a live conversation and Q&A session on youth mentalhealth, and how to de-escalate an explosive situation with an angry, dysregulated child, presented by William Dodson, M.D., LF-APA. Though it’s notincluded in the DSM criteria for ADHD, deficient emotionalself-regulation is a core facet of the condition and an almost-universalproblem. In males, emotional dysregulation is more likely to manifest asaggression or hostility. In females, it may look like anxiety or a mooddisorder. In both genders, it is exacerbated by elevated stress and by trauma —both of which our children and teens have experienced during the pandemic andamid news of recent school shootings. Information will include:

How to recognize the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive signsof agitation

How to safely approach and respond to a person’s anger, aggression, and/or agitation, including suggested language

Age-appropriate de-escalation techniques, including activelistening, reflections, and emotion-less responses

Self-calming strategies to teach children and teens

Those registered will receive a link to the live event and areplay link to watch at your convenience. Sponsored by ADDitude.
