DEFICIENT EMOTIONAL SELF-REGULATION: THE OVERLOOKED ADHDSYMPTOM THAT IMPACTS EVERYTHING

Thursday, August 26, 2021 1:00 p.m.

Virtual Event

ADHD is typically considered a disorder of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity. However, from the publication of the firstmedical papers on ADHD in 1798 until the 1970s, emotion was included in theconceptualization of the disorder. Research shows that emotional impulsivenessand deficientemotional self-regulation (DESR) — the inability to regulate responsesto certain emotions and to avoid overreacting to life situations — are anintegral part of ADHD.Although DESR is excluded from the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria forADHD, it has serious negative effects on a person’s daily functioning. Inaddition, DESR may worsen other ADHD symptoms and plays a part in severalcomorbid disorders, especially oppositionaldefiant disorder. Dr. Russell Barkley, Ph.D. will discuss how to determinewhich aspects of emotional dysregulation stem from ADHD or a comorbidcondition. He will also outline the best approach to diagnosing and treatingDESR. To register or get a link to watch the recorded version of this webimar, pleasevisit
